How Thick Should a Baby Play Mat Be? UK Guide | CloudFloor

If you have hard flooring — parquet, tile, laminate or engineered wood — the single most important spec on a baby play mat is its thickness. It's also the spec most often exaggerated. This guide explains what the number actually needs to be, and how to check that a brand's claim is real.

What most UK play mats actually measure

Pick up a tape measure and check a few of the play mats on sale in the UK right now. The majority land between 1 cm and 3.5 cm, even when the listing says "extra thick" or "super plush". At that depth, a mat softens a hard floor a little, but it won't absorb the impact of a baby rolling onto their back or losing balance while learning to sit.

How much cushioning a baby needs

For supervised floor play from 0–24 months on hard flooring, you want enough foam that:

  • a baby dropping from a sitting position onto their back lands with a soft give, not a thud;
  •
  • tummy time on tile or stone in winter isn't a cold shock — the foam insulates;
  •
  • the surface still feels stable underfoot for a crawling baby pushing off it.

In practice that means a genuine 3 cm minimum, and 5 cm if your floors are especially hard or your baby spends long stretches on the floor each day.

3 cm vs 5 cm

Both work. The trade-off is weight and handling, not safety:

  • 5 cm — the most cushioned option. Best for tile, stone and concrete-hard floors, and for daily use. Heavier, so it tends to stay in one place.
  •
  • 3 cm — lighter and lower-profile. Easier to lift one-handed, move between rooms and roll up for storage. Still a proper cushioned, non-slip floor.

You can compare both in our size and thickness guide.

How to verify a thickness claim

"Extra thick" is marketing, not a measurement. Before you buy, look for a stated figure in centimetres on the product page, and check that it's the core thickness, not the thickness plus packaging. When your mat arrives, measure it yourself against a ruler — a trustworthy brand states a number you can confirm.

Every CloudFloor mat is a single continuous piece with a verifiable 3 cm or 5 cm foam core, stated on each product page. Browse the range.
